The Deities of Witchcraft

Goddess Representation

These are part and parcel of the 'wiccan way', for a sound foundation for the practices of magic and other aspect of the wiccans to be understood it is necessary to understand the concept of the deities that surround it.

Most denominations of wicca believe in a God and a Goddess. This is the main difference between some mainstream religions, in the western world.

These can be seen as anthropological representations, of energies which exist throughout the universe. The concept of duality can be seen throughout the universe from antimatter to matter, positive to negative, male to female, etc.

Most wiccans may refer themselves to follow a certain pantheon. This is to say that they are attributing their God and Goddess (with the aspects of the other gods and goddesses if more than two in a pantheon) with attributes that the goddess represents, some revere Egyptian gods, and goddesses, some Roman, some Greek, some Celtic, some Norse etc, an example of which could a man invoking  the goddess Aphrodite for help/guidance in love, hence the "expertise" of a particular characteristic of deity is called upon.

Most wiccans utilise, however, the Celtic pantheon of goddesses (native to the UK) as it was the "original" pantheon that Gardners' coven began with.

Some people may consider the God and Goddess as energy, placed in human form for ease of conception, with expertise in all areas. This area of witchcraft is hard to pin down due to the variety of choices available, and if you feel that witchcraft is the path for you, then a choice is available to your own view upon the nature of divinity.
